Swire speaks at Computer, Privacy and Data Protection Conference

Peter Swire spoke on a plenary panel at the Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection ’15 conference (21-23 January in Brussels), the leading annual academic and policy conference in Brussels on data protection issues. His panel included senior officials from the European Data Protection Supervisor’s office and the CNIL (French data protection authority). Swire’s remarks assessed the state of surveillance reform one year after President Obama addressed these issues, which have been so prominent in the wake of the Snowden revelations, and Swire reported greater progress than many have realized. During the trip, at the request of the US Mission to the EU, Swire met at the European Parliament offices with seven Members of the European Parliament and their staffs, to discuss surveillance reform. He also had dinner with the US Deputy Chief of Mission, meeting with senior data protection officials from the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, and the European Parliament.
