Responding to Tragedy: A French Perspective on the Challenge of Terrorism
Guest speaker: Consul General Louis de Corail (France)
On Thursday, November 3rd, the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies along with the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy (CISTP) and the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) hosted France’s Consul General Louis De Corail who discussed France’s strategy for combatting the threat of terrorism within its own borders and how it is cooperating with other nations around the world to halt this global threat.
Mr. de Corail emphasized that terrorism is not a new phenomenon faced by France, although recent attacks were of a different scale and nature than those previously committed. The presentation covered the domestic and international – particularly with respect to the Syrian-Iraqi conflict zone – challenges that the French government is currently contending with. A comprehensive overview of the Action Plan adopted in 2015 and its main priority areas provided the audience with a detailed understanding of the main steps taken by France in the wake of recent attacks. The audience then had the opportunity to pose a series of questions to Mr de Corail, leading to an interesting discussion over France’s contemporary policy approach to counterterrorism.
