Zachariah Swint spent the summer of 2016 in the heart of European politics in the European Parliament. He interned in the office of Petras Austrevicius, a Vice President of the center ALDE political group. In a summer full of dramatic events, Zach attended ALDE group meetings, high level MEP briefings, session of the European Parliament, committee meetings of Foreign Affairs and Human Rights, among others high level meetings. Zach prepared various briefings ranging from the finance of terrorism to press freedom in Turkey. By preparing a report from a briefing concerning Russian disinformation by the Kremlin, Zach authored a hand-out that was circulated to the all of the ALDE group members including President Guy Verhofstadt. Being in a European institution during Brexit, probably the biggest threat to the existence of the EU in its history, Zach was privy to countless debates and conferences in the aftermath of Brexit. Zach attended the emergency plenary session called after Brexit on June 28th that saw all of the European heavyweights in the institutions, from President Jean Claude Juncker to UKIP leader Nigel Farage, trade blows in an emotional gathering to determine the fate of the EU. This internship threw Zach deep into European Politics and prepared him for further work in European Affairs.
